Infant elder sister of Civil War hero Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, little Rosa was born to their parents, John and Mary Minah (Meenagh) Sheridan, in County Cavan, Ireland, in 1829, the second of their six children. The Sheridans embarked for the United States with baby Rosa and their young son Patrick early in the year 1831, but she died during the voyage and was buried at sea. Her famous younger brother was born soon afterward in March 1831, and his birth was followed by those of three more siblings in Somerset, Ohio, where the Sheridan family settled.
