The family moved to Wasco, Sherman County, Oregon sometime between 1885 and 1890. They lived there at least until 1893. By the 1910 census, they had moved to 902 4th Street, Hood River, Oregon.
Known as J. Gilbert, he worked as a forest ranger. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942 (at age 62) he was described as 6' 1 1/2" tall, 200 lbs, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion, with a scar on his right wrist and right eye.
