Joseph N. Valentine Sr., of Newburgh, entered into rest on Friday, January 11, 2008 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 90.
Son of the late Nicholas and Rose Bontempo Valentine, he was born July 15, 1917 in Newburgh. He was married to the late Candida "Connie" Marie Valentine who passed away in August of 2002.
Joseph proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. Joseph served in the South Pacific with the 501st Squadron and received the Philippine Liberation Medal in Washington, DC. Joseph also received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Joseph was a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post #386; a lifelong parishioner and usher at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh; American Legion; Knights of Columbus Council #444; past President Newburgh Bowling Association, Hall of Fame Inductee; Town of Newburgh Republican Committee; retired President Val-Ron Corporation, West End Couples Club, and played first base in the City of Newburgh Softball League.
He is survived by three children eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren: ; two brothers, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Nicholas and Thomas and sisters-in-law, Josephine and Kathryn.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, January 14, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joseph's name to Sacred Heart Church, 25 S. Robinson Ave., Newburgh, NY 12550 and/or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
