Her parents went to Oregon in the mid 1870's by covered wagon. Not liking Oregon, they soon returned to Missouri. Beta was born on the return trip crossing the plains near Boise, ID. She was also called Bessie.

Charles and Betha had six children: David Lawrence, Harry Leonard, Lavina Charity (Orashek), James Neal, Evelyn Ethel (King) and Daniel Sweeney.
