An influential philanthropist, Shaw inherited his father's wealth, enabling him to pursue his passions: social reform, the abolition of slavery, and politics. He spoke against slavery at every opportunity, and was influential in his son's (Colonel Robert Gould Shaw) acceptance of the colonelship of the 54th Mass. Inf., one of the first black regiments to see action in the Civil War.
