Rev Thomas Shaw Alty was the son of Benjamin and Sarah Ann (Shaw) Alty. He was the husband of Mina Margaret (Crafts) Alty. They were married October 24, 1911. Mina died January 20, 1957. Rev. Alty was a minister in the Newfoundland Conference of the Methodist Church of Canada. He was a minister in the Genesee (Western New York/now Upper New York) Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Thomas Shaw Alty was born on a farm at Ladies Hill, Pilling, Lancashire, England, on September 7, 1879. After his conversion and call to the ministry he emigrated to Canada. He studied and accepted an appointment by the Methodist Church of Canada as a missionary for two years to the Indians and Eskimos in Labrador and Newfoundland.
In 1911, he came to the United States and was accepted on trial in the Genesee Annual Conference. He faithfully served a series of appointments until his retirement in 1949. Following his retirement he lived in Clarence, New York. He died on November 3, 1960 and was buried in Clarence Fillmore Cemetery.
