She was the great-granddaughter of Jonathan "John" Ralston and Elizabeth "Betsy" Pitzer Ralston of Brown County, Ohio.

Her grandmother Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy and 25 members of the Kennedy family in 1855 relocated from Brown County, Ohio to Douglas County, Kansas.
