US Congressman. A native of Maine and graduate of Bowdoin College, Prentiss studied law in Maine and Ohio before settling in Mississippi in the late 1820s. Living first in Natchez and later in Vicksburg, he served in the Mississippi Legislature from 1836 until 1837. Contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne to the U.S. House of Representatives, he was elected to the contested Congressional seat and served from May 1838 until March 1839. After an unsuccessful run for the US Senate in 1840, Prentiss resumed practicing law in Mississippi.
