Mathematician. Born in Nedstrand, Norway, he studied at the University of Christiania (now Oslo). His body of work mainly concentrated on the solution of the Quintic Equation, the elliptic functions and the group theory. Part of his researches were published in the influential "Crelle's Journal". After a sled journey to visit his fiancee in Froland for Christmas 1828 he fell ill. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 26. German mathematician August Leopold Crelle (a friend and colleague, and founder of "Crelle's Journal") had been successful in obtaining an appointment for him at the University of Berlin, but the news arrived two days after Abel's death. A crater on the Moon is named after him. In 2002 the Norwegian government established the Abel Prize in mathematics.
