He served in the Army during World War II and attained the rank of captain in the Army Air Corps and major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
James worked for the U.S. Treasury Department for 34 years. He held various positions, including agent with the IRS, special agent in the intelligence division, and program director in the office of the assistant regional commissioner.
In 1971 he opened a tax accounting firm in Bala Cynwyd. He retired in 1989.
He had lived in Wayne for five years before moving to Bala Cynwyd 40 years ago.
James Fogarty was a member of the Men of Malvern, a laymen's retreat organization; the Overbrook Golf Club; the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick; the Knights of Columbus, and the American Catholic Historical Society.
James P. Fogarty, 83, of Bala Cynwyd, a retired tax accountant, died of renal failure Tuesday at St. Joseph's Villa in Flourtown. His wife of 33 years, Helen M. Thomson Fogarty, died in 1977.
He is survived by six sons, Brian, Terence, Lawrence, Robert, Kevin and James 3d; two daughters, Patricia Campbell and Maureen Denham; three sisters, and nine grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was said at St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church, Bala Cynwyd.
The family suggests contributions be made to the St. Matthias Sanctuary Guild, Highland and Bryn Mawr Avenues, Bala Cynwyd, Pa. 19004.
