William Robert Cleveland, of Crosby, well known here, was killed in action in France, June 11, presumably in the fighting at Chateau-Thierry, where the marines won lasting fame, according to word received last night by the young man's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Cleveland of Crosby.
The message to W.C., Cleveland containing the official announcement reads:
"Deeply regret to inform you cablegram from abroad stating Sergeant William Robert Cleveland, of U.S. M.C., was killed in action, June 11. Remains will be interred abroad until end of war. Accept my heartfelt sympathy in your great loss. (page torn)
The official notification of supreme sacrifice of life by their son in defense of the nation and civilization was received by the parents at Mt. Jewett on their return from Oklahoma. Young Cleveland had been in France since December and his death was falsely rumored some months ago. He was 24 years old and formerly lived in Mt. Jewett with his parents.
Besides the parents, there survive two sisters, Miss Margaret of Erie, and Mrs. F.J. Hayes of Warren and one brother, Albert of Crosby.
