Eliot served his country in World War II in The United States Army Air Forces. Following the war, he was honorably discharged and had achieved the rank of Captain.
He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the parish of Our Lady of Malibu. He was a longtime resident of Beverly Hills before moving to Malibu. Eliot was married to the former Irene Lentz from January 1937 until her death in 1962.
He was a short story author and screenwriter for most of his life, writing fourteen screenplays. He worked at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios alongside his brother. He also worked at Republic Studios for ten years.
Eliot suffered several strokes and was paralyzed for the last years of his life. He passed away of occlusive calcific coronary atherosclerosis at 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 1965 at Wadsworth VA Medical Center in West Los Angeles, California. He resided at 4677 Avenida Del Mar in Malibu, California at the time of his death.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, March 17, 1965 in Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church located at 3625 Winter Canyon Road in Malibu. A viewing was held on Tuesday, March 16, 1965 at Cunningham & O'Connor Mortuary located at 5959 Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. After the viewing, The Holy Rosary was recited.
Eliot was interred following the conclusion of the Mass at Los Angeles National Cemetery in West Los Angeles.
