He was the son of George Hairgrove and Elizabeth Adams Hairgrove, and was the husband of Sarah Johnston Hairgrove.

William and he son Asa were survivors of the Marais des Cygnes Massacre.

William later became Sheriff of Linn County, Kansas. His son Asa would become Auditor of the state of Kansas (term of office, 12 Jan 1863 to 9 Jan 1865).

*It is said that William Hairgrove considered John Brown one of his staunchest friends.
