Editor, Lexicographer, Publisher. He attended Wittenberg College (Now Wittenberg University) and Wittenberg Theological Seminary, was ordained a Lutheran pastor in 1860, and served pastorates in several states. In 1876, to publish religious texts, he founded I. K. Funk and Company. The following year he was joined by a former Wittenberg classmate, Adam Willis Wagnalls. By 1890, the company was known as Funk and Wagnalls. Their best known work, "The Standard Dictionary of the English Language", was published in 1893, after which the company became best known for reference books. Later in life, Funk was noted less for his language work than for his research into psychic phenomena and related publications, most notably "The Psychic Riddle" (1907).
