Sgt. Timothy M. Smith, 25, of South Lake Tahoe, California, was a 2001 South Tahoe High School graduate. Tim was a compassionate, non-judgmental, and generous family man. Timmy lit up every room he entered; he was everyone's best friend, loyal to the end. He joined the Army in April 2004 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was currently assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He previously deployed with his unit to Afghanistan from March to November 2006 and deployed to Iraq in November 2007. He died of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Tom's military education includes the Warrior Leader Course, Combat Lifesaver Course and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Team Course, and his awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge. He is survived by his wife, Shayna Richard-Smith, and his son, Riley; mother and father Patti and Mike Smith; brother and sister, Tommy and Jackie; grandparents, Barbara Smith and John "Gramps" Keefe; mother-in-law and father-in-law Terry Morris and Bret Richards; and cousins, Rick and Brianne. His grandmother Peggy Wickstrom predeceased Timmy.
