Comfort Worthington Dorsey Porter was born in 1823 at Mount Hebron Plantation in Ellicott's Mills, MD. Today the town is known as Ellicott City. She attended the Patapsco Female Institute, a prestigious academy for young women that went beyond the studies of a typical finishing school. After graduation, she followed her family to Missouri. Dorsey married Gilchrist Porter, who as a U.S. Representative helped prevent Missouri from seceding during the Civil War.
