Highgate Cemetery Founder. Stephen Geary was a British architect and entrepreneur. His best-known work is Highgate Cemetery, opened in 1839, where he designed the Egyptian Avenue and the Terrace Catacombs. He was also a founding member of the cemetery company. He is also associated with the design of Gravesend Cemetery, and with the design of St Pancras Collegiate School, London. He designed a monument with a statue of King George IV that was demolished just a few years after construction that gave its name to Kings Cross Station. He published Designs for Tombs and Cenotaphs in which he was credited with the founding of other cemeteries in the London area. He took out several patents for inventions ranging from artificial fuel to street paving.
