French Army General. Father of Alexandre Dumas (père) and grandfather of Alexandre Dumas (fils). The son of Alexandre-Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie and a Haitian slave, he enlisted in the French army in 1786 under the name Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. In 1789 his regiment was sent to Villers-Cotterêts, where he met Marie-Louise Labouret; they married in 1792. Dumas showed tremendous courage as a soldier during the French Revolution and he was made a general at age 31, though his outspokeness later earned him the enmity of Napoleon. After a campaign in Egypt, he was captured in Italy while returning home. For the 20 months of his imprisonment France made no attempt to ransom him, and when he was finally released he was deaf in one ear and partly paralyzed. He died of stomach cancer a few years later. His son, Alexandre Dumas, based many of the adventures in his book "The Three Musketeers" on his father's war exploits.
