Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Buenos Aires, Umberto Mozzoni was raised in Macerata, Italy. Apollinare and later at the local University, he was ordained priest on August 14, 1927. Performing pastoral work in the diocese of Macerata–Tolentino, where he lectured theology and canon law at the local seminary until 1935, he successively served as secretary and auditor of the apostolic delegations in Canada and Great Britain and in the apostolic nunciature in Portugal. Working for the protection of foreign missionaries during his tenure in Bolivia, on September 20, 1958 he was named apostolic nuncio in Argentina, dispatching two thousand missionaries in October 1960 "to open the dialogue between the Church and Argentina on the everlasting efficacy of the Gospel for the advancement of the Argentine people". Appointed nuncio in Brazil on April 19, 1969, he directed there the work of missionaries, especially those in the Amazon jungle. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon with the deaconry of Sant'Eugenio in the consistory of March 5, 1973. Appointed president of the Cardinalatial Commission for the Shrines of Pompeii and Loreto on June 19, 1974, he was the Cardinal Protodeacon from June 15, 1980 until opting to the order of cardinal priests, retaining his same titular church on February 2, 1983. Collapsing while celebrating mass, he died in a Roman clinic on Monday, November 7, 1983. Pope John Paul II presided over his exequies, celebrated at the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on Thursday, November 10.
