The son of Jonathan & Ruth (Peck) Atwater, he married Lydia Rosewell, daughter of Richard & Lydia (Trowbridge) Rosewell on April 9, 1713 in New Haven, CT.

Oct., 1718 Jeremiah was granted the sole privilege of making linseed oil in the colony and that for the next 20 years he and his heirs may collect damages if anyone else produces linseed oil in the colony.
In 1721, he was the master of a sloop.
