Conductor, Composer. A native of Montreal, Couture studied music in France from 1873 until 1875. In 1880, he became conductor of the Montreal Philharmonic Society until 1899. In 1894, he became the conductor of the first Montreal Symphony Orchestra until 1896. As a composer, he is best remembered for works such as "Messe de Requiem" and his most important piece, the oratorio "Jean le Précurseur."
