Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Giovanni Battista Casali del Drago came from an ancient patrician Family, dating back to 1494 which belonged to the city's nobility, holding the title of Marquis of Riofreddo. Receiving his education at the Roman Diocesan Seminary, from where he obtained a doctorate in utroque iuris in both civil and canon laws, he was ordained priest in December 1860. Named privy chamberlain de numero participantium of Pope Pius IX on November 12, 1866, he was furthermore appointed canon of the chapter of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica on March 19, 1867, canon of the chapter of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on August 22, 1871, protonotary apostolic supernumerary on March 2, 1878, and domestic prelate and abbreviatore de Parco Maggiore on March 22, 1878. On August 6, 1886, he received the appointment of deacon of the Sacred Pontifical Chapel. Aged 57, Msgr. Casali del Drago was elected titular Latin Patriarch of the see of Constantinople with residence within the Roman Curia on November 29, 1895, receiving his episcopal consecration of the liturgical feast day of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 of that year, in the chapel of the choir of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 19, 1899 with the title of Santa Maria della Vittoria. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals from April 15, 1901 until June 9, 1902, the Cardinal was decorated with the Cross of the Knight of Malta and named commander of the Civil Order of Ferdinando IV of Tuscany, commander of the Order of Carlos III of Spain and knight of the Order of Francesco I of Naples. Passing away in his native Rome, his body was exposed in his title and later interred at the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
