United States World War II Naval Officer, US Congressman. The son of a World War I who was killed in action, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1936 and then attended Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. During World War II he first served on the submarines "USS Wahoo", "USS Pollack" and "USS Hawkbill". In 1944 he was given command first of the "USS Flasher", then the "USS Cubera" submarines. While in command of the "Flasher" for her fifth, sixth and seventh war patrols he and his crew sunk six enemy ships for a total of 43,800 tons. Receiving the Navy Cross, the Silver Star and three Bronze Stars for his actions during the war, in 1947 he retired from the United States Navy at the rank of Captain due to heart problems. He enrolled in the University of Virginia and graduated in 1950 with a law degree. He returned to Memphis, Tennessee and became a successful lawyer. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Tennessee's 9th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1965 to 1967.
