Plantation owner and attorney. The son of Congressman and Revolutionary War veteran William Smith (1751-1837), he graduated from South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) in 1808, studied law and became an attorney and plantation owner in Spartanburg. Smith was active in the militia and achieved the rank of Colonel. He served in the South Carolina Senate from 1818 to 1826 and the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1828 to 1830.
