Vermont Lieutenant Governor. His given first name was Ebenezer, and he used his middle name throughout his life. He was a lawyer in Chelsea and a farmer who served in local offices for most of his career, including Chelsea Justice of the Peace, Orange County State's Attorney from 1849 to 1850 and 1853, and County Clerk from 1857 to 1858. In 1857 he represented Chelsea in the Vermont House of Representatives. He was elected Lieutenant Governor as a Republican and served from 1858 to 1860. In 1866 he served in the Vermont Senate. Martin was a member of the Bennington Battle Monument Commission and was active in the Orange County Agricultural Society, serving as its Secretary. In an 1867 speech at Orange County's Tunbridge Fair, Martin referred to the annual event as a "little World's Fair". The phrase began appearing in its advertisements the following year and it has been called the Tunbridge World's Fair ever since. Martin's first name appears as "Burnam" in some records.
