Daughter of 13th United States President Millard Fillmore.
She spoke French fluently and was conversant in Spanish, German, and Italian. She taught briefly in the Buffalo schools until her father became president in 1850. An accomplished musician, she played the piano, harp, and guitar. She exercised the role of White House hostess at White House functions. Every Friday night the White House hosted a reception, where she had to stand for hours greeting and socializing with guests. She accompanied the President on a variety of public functions. She died a sudden death from cholera at age 22.
