Lewis was a small, compact man and very powerful. In Feb. 1859, he jumped into the 'Whirlpool' in Bayard, saving the life of a little girl who had fallen into it. I am told that he never recovered his strength or health from this heroic deed and died in August of that year, leaving a wife and four children.
