Staff Sgt. Philip L. Travis of Snellville, Georgia grew up in Alabama before moving to Atlanta as a teen. He loved to read and he loved computers. He was a very jovial guy, a very happy-go-lucky guy. Philip had a lifelong wish to be involved in the military. He was born at Fort Polk and for a time lived in Brewton. He followed the footsteps of his father, James Travis Sr., who also served in the military. Philip first joined the United States Navy where he served for 10 years as a cook. He became a firefighter after leaving the service, and ultimately joined the Army Reserve. He really cared about his job. He use to say when we got back to Atlanta he was going to go out and laugh about his time in the military. He loved big knives and had quite a collection. His other hobbies were practicing martial arts and collecting oddities from around the world. Philip enjoyed baking heart-shaped red velvet cakes, and his specialty, fried turkey, was delightful. He was a quiet, reserved man who loved his family, his friends and his country. He talked about enjoying the hope and appreciation of Iraqi children when soldiers gave them small gifts. He was so close to going home. He died of injuries sustained earlier that day when his truck accidentally rolled over at Tallil Air Base, Iraq. He was 41.
