Adjutant General of Indiana, April 26th - May 15th 1861.

On 5/22/1861 he was commissioned Colonel into Field & Staff of the 12th Indiana Infantry.
He Resigned on 8/6/1861 "having become unable to ride a horse" due to "violent attacks of cramping of stomach and bowels."

On 8/5/1861 he was commissioned into
US Volunteers Paymaster's Dept
He Resigned on 7/22/1862 "with the view of offering my serviced to the Government in the field among the Volunteers of my native state."

Uncle of Major General Lew Wallace of Crawfordsville.

Col. John Milton Wallace was the youngest son of Andrew and Ellen Wallace, and was Governor David Wallace's brother.
