Professional football player. After playing football at Ole Miss from 1934 to 1936, he was drafted in the 7th round in 1937 by the New York Giants. He played offensive and defensive end with the Giants from 1937 thru 1941. He joined the US military during World War II and played on two top-flight service football teams, the Georgia Pre-Flight Skycrackers in 1942 and Iowa Pre-flight Seahawks in 1944. When he got out of the service as a first lieutenant in 1945, he played nine games with the Chicago Cardinals before rejoining the Giants for three games in 1945 and finished up his seven-year NFL career with the Giants in 1946. During his NFL career he was a three-time all pro defensive end. In 1947, James Eugene Poole was hired as a football coach under Hall of Fame coach John Vaught. He retired from Ole Miss in 1970. He was a charter member of the Ole Miss Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1964. He died of cancer.
