Former Dean of the Sacred Roman Rota of the Roman Curia, Archbishop Raffaello Funghini was born on January 1, 1929, in Castiglion Fiorentino, Arezzo, Italy, and was ordained to the priesthood at 23 years of age on July 13, 1952, for the Diocese of Arezzo. Moving to Rome to pursue further studies, he subsequently worked for a lifetime at the Tribunal of the Roman Rota, erected in 1908, until he was appointed its dean at the age of 70, on December 11, 1999, succeeding Msgr. Mario Francesco Pompedda, following the latter's assignment as prefect of the Apostolic Signatura.

On January 31, 2004, Msgr. Funghini was elected Archbishop of the Titular See of Novapietra following his retirement from the Rota by Pope John Paul II. He received his episcopal consecration on the following March 25, from Msgr. Angelo Sodano, Cardinal Secretary of State of the Vatican City, assisted by Msgr. Gualtiero Bassetti, Bishop of the Diocese of Arezzo–Cortona–Sansepolcro and by Msgr. Joseph Mercieca, Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Malta.

President of the Corte di Appello dello Stato della Città del Vaticano and Primicerio Arcisodalizio della Curia Romana, one of his last public appearances took place on March 31, 2006, at via Porta Castello in Rome, when he attended the launching of the book "Ordinamento Giuridico dello Stato della Città del Vaticano" written by Federico Cammeo. He died on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, aged 77.

A first funeral Mass, presided by Archbishop Agostino Vallini, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, was celebrated at the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso of Rome. Successively his body was transferred to Arezzo, where another funeral Mass was celebrated at the cathedral on Saturday, May 20, 2006, followed by interment at the cemetery of his native Castiglion Fiorentino.
