Joseph Bernard was the first son of Ignatius and Jane Green Simpson. He was born in Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1752.

He was a corporal in Captain Smallwood's Maryland Company during the American Revolution (GAR# 748499). Joseph Bernard Simpson is a proven ancestor for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

In 1782, Joseph Bernard was married to Mary Ann Montgomery by a Jesuit priest, John Bolton, in Charles County, Maryland.
They had two sons:
James Montgomery (b. 1783)
Richard D. (b. 1786).

Using what little inheritance money he received from his father's will, Joseph, his wife and two sons, signed on with the Catholic westward wagon train. During this period of time, Joseph and his cousin, John,

Joseph and Mary Ann had six more children after moving to Kentucky:
Catherine (bc. 1792)
Helen (bc. 1796)
Ignatius William (b. 1802)
Thomas L. (b. 1806)
Joseph Dionysius (b. 1809)
John Ferdinand (b. 1810).

In 1808, Joseph Bernard bought 100 acres of land from William Rice on the western branch of Cartwright Creek (south of present day Highway 152 and east of Blandford Road).

According to the marriage records of Washington County, Kentucky, Joseph did not sign the marriage license for his daughter, Catherine, in 1817. In this document, James is listed as the administrator of Joseph's estate. The death date of 1822 is probably not accurate.

I have been researching Joseph for years and cannot find any accurate records of his burial. I am assuming he is buried in the old St. Anne's cemetery on Rt. 1183 (Cissellville Road) near his property. There are only a few stones remaining. The Archdiocese of Louisville has no records for that cemetery.
