Roman Catholic Cardinal. Acerra born Giuseppe Casoria entered the local seminary before furthering his studies at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy, Naples, and successively in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran Athenaeum and the Pontifical Athenaeum San Apollinare, earning doctorates in theology, philosophy and utroque iuris. Ordained priest on December 21, 1930, he was assigned between 1937 and 1972 in different organs of the Roman Curia, serving among others as defender of the Matrimonial Bond of the Sacred Roman Rota and of the ecclesiastical tribunal of the Conciliar Region of Campania; lawyer in the Sacred Congregation of Rites for the Causes of the Saints; commissary for the Matrimonial Causes in the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office; prelate referendary of the Supreme Tribunal of Apostolic Signature; voting Prelate and judge of the Appellate Tribunal of the Vicariate of Rome; defender of the Matrimonial Bond and commissary for Matrimonial Causes in the Sacred Congregation for Oriental Church; consultor of the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Church; undersecretary of the Sacred Congregation for Discipline of Sacraments; expert in the Preparatory Commission for the Discipline of Sacraments of the Second Vatican Council; qualifier, expert and judge in the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office and secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Vescovio by Pope Paul VI on January 6, 1972, he received his episcopal consecration on the following February 13 inside the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from the named Pontiff. Named secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of the Saints on February 2, 1973, Msgr. Casoria was furthermore appointed pro-prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship on August 24, 1981. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal deacon in the Consistory of February 2, 1983, with the deaconry of San Giuseppe in via Trionfale and appointing him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship on the following day. Resigning the prefecture on April 8, 1984, he opted for the order of cardinal priests, having his deaconry elevated 'pro illa vice' to title on April 5, 1993. Passing away at the Clinica Pio XI in Rome, the Cardinal was laid to rest inside his family's tomb at the cemetery of his native Acerra.
