Irene Melba Hitchcock

Irene Melba Hitchcock, 65, of Ulysses, Kan., died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Salina (Kan.) Regional Hospital. She was mother of Albert Leslie Hitchcock of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses, Kan., with the Rev. Sam Bynum officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery. Arrangements are with Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Mrs. Hitchcock was born July 24, 1938, in Fredonia, Kan., to Albert Berry and Deris Lorene (Crawshaw) Scroggins. The family moved to the Ulysses area in 1940. Mrs. Hitchcock was a 1956 graduate of Grant County Rural High School and had worked at L&J Implement, Duckwalls and Ansel Manufacturing. She married Arthur LeRoy Hitchcock May 24, 1956, in Ulysses. She was a member of Country View Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, bird-watching, growing plants and flowers, crocheting, crafts and being with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Iona Berger. Survivors include her husband; another son, Arthur LeRoy "Artie" Hitchcock II of Damar, Kan.; a daughter, Donna Irene McEachern of Pratt, Kan.; a brother, Arthur Scroggins of Chicago; two sisters, Iva Hindman of Satanta, Kan., and Ilene Pierce of Las Cruces, N.M.; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Rebecca A. Morris House of Salina (Heartland Hospitality Home) in care of the Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
