George E. B. Peddy was born Aug 22 1892 in Shelby Co., TX. George was born after his father, William Henry "Buck" Peddy, died from burns sustained from fighting a rail fence fire. In 1914 George entered the Univ. of Texas and a year later dropped out to teach for a year, earning $90 per month. In 1917 George was student body President at the Univ of Texas. As a member of the 35th Texas State Legislature, he worked for prohibition and women's suffrage - the two big issues of the time. George registered for the WWI draft becoming #2447 on the list. When he registered for the draft he was age 24, Univ. of Texas student, and a State Representative from Shelby Co., TX. George resigned from the Legislature and joined the Army. He later accepted a commission as Captain in the Army in WWI and he served in France and Germany. After the war George graduated in 1920 with his Law Degree. He formed a partnership with classmates, David S Simmons and Dan Jackson, later Judges in the 129th Judicial District. George met Gertrude Erwin of Columbia TN at the Univ. of Texas and they married Feb. 3, 1921 in Austin, TX. George served two years as assistant district attorney for Harris Co., TX and later for 2 years as United States Attorney in charge of mail fraud prosecutions. He served with the prestigious law firm of Vinson, Elkins, Weems & Francis in Houston TX from 1925 to 1942. George voluntered for service during WWII and he saw action in North Africa, Italy, Normandy, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. He was a Lieutenant Colonel and he served as staff officer in the Fifth Infantry Division, Third Army, from the Normandy invasion until the end of the war. He was attached to George Patton's command. He was a member of the 5th INFANTRY DIVISION, "Red Diamond Division". He was assigned to this unit 13 May 1944 as Maj George E B Peddy. He left the unit on 1 Nov 1944 as Lt Col George E B Peddy. He was appointed Deputy Governor of Franfort, Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Croix de Guerre. After WWII he formed his own law firm. George and Gertrude raised her two nephews as foster children after their parents were killed in a car wreck. George E. B. Peddy died rather suddenly from cancer in the Herman Hospital in Harris Co., TX on June 13, 1951. His body lay in state in the First Methodist Church in Houston TX. George was buried in Ramah Cemetery at Tenaha TX beside his mother.
