Social Reformer, Educator. A member of the “Fighting McCooks", the Ohio family that had seventeen members fight for the Union during the Civil War, he graduated from Connecticut's Trinity College in 1863 and was ordained in the Episcopal Church. During the war he served as a Chaplain in the 1st West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, a regiment recruited primarily in Ohio. After the war he became a pastor in Detroit, Michigan, and East Hartford, Connecticut, and also served as a Professor at Trinity College for over 30 years, and also served as Chairman of the college's Board of Fellows. He became nationally known social reformer, and his groundbreaking research, studies, reports, and speeches were among the first in America to address alcoholism, public education, homelessness, voter fraud, prostitution, disabled veterans, orphans and other issues. Trinity's John J. McCook Professorship in Modern Languages was endowed in his honor. His former dwelling, the Butler-McCook House, is Hartford, Connecticut’s oldest standing home and is open for tours.
