I believe the birth date on this headstone is incorrect. I have recently read a letter written by William's father, Henry Leeds, to his mother dated December 22, 1839 in which Henry indicates in a P.S. dated the 24th that "Since writing the above my Baby Boy has concluded to wish us a Merry Christmas as well as a happy New Year, today at 4 o'clock and 5 minutes we had presented to us as fine a Boy as not only the State of N. York but the whole U. States, can produce, you would be astonished to see him, he is remarkable for a high and noble forehead, a lovely mouth, brilliant eyes, Roman nose, and great dignity of manner, in fact I cannot describe him better than to say he is the image of his father except not quite so handsome."
