US Congressman. He was educated in Sussex County and became a farmer. A member of a family long prominent in Virginia politics, Claiborne served in the state House of Delegates from 1810 to 1812 and the State Senate from 1821 to 1825, and also served as a member of Virginia's Executive Council. In 1824 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Jacksonian and served six terms, 1825 to 1837, the final one as an Anti-Jacksonian. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1836 and returned to farming in Virginia. Nathaniel H. Claiborne was the nephew of Congressman Thomas Claiborne, cousin of John and Thomas Claiborne, both of whom served in Congress, the brother of Governor William C.C. Claiborne and General Ferdinand L. Claiborne, and the uncle of Congressman J.F.H. Claiborne.
