Mrs. Rhea May Whitener died Friday at St. Anthony's hospital in Amarillo, Texas, after a short illness from acute gastritis. She and her husband, Master Sergeant Ralph Whitener, were enroute to California, where he was being transferred, after a three days' visit at Newton, about ten days ago, when she became ill from food poisoning.

She was born near Newton, January 21, 1917, a daughter of Ira and Nettie May, and resided here until about four years ago when she went to Washington, D.C.

Besides her husband, she leaves her father, Ira May, her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Resch, and one sister, Mrs. Cletus (Mildred) Jansen, all of Newton; three half-sisters and three half-brothers of Newton; her step-mother, Mrs. Ira May; and many other relatives and friends.

Her mother preceded her in death in infancy and she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Resch, with whom she made her home until she went to Washington. (George Resch and Josephine Resch)

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Thomas church in Newton and burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery. The Rev. Fr. Maurice Gavin, pastor, will officiate.
