GRAY, THELMA ADAMS, age 99, of Birmingham, passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Wester Gray; her parents, Joseph Rufus Adams and Lillie Frances Burnett Adams; her sister, Jessie A. Coleman; and her brother, Claudis Gerald Adams. Survivors: son, Wester Adams (Patsy) Gray; daughter, Anne G. (James G.) Hartline; 4 grandchildren, Liesl O. (Peter) McDonald, John Allan (Celisa) Owens, Steven Allan Gray, and Kevin Michael (Blake) Gray; great grandchildren, Crosby Jack Gray, Carter Allan Owens, Vivian Marie Gray and Wilson Adams Gray. Born in Aberdeen, Mississippi, February 20, 1905, she moved to Birmingham with her family in 1914. She was an active member of South Avondale Baptist Church more than 80 years. When that church merged with First Baptist Church Irondale in 2000, she was recognized as the oldest member and the one who had been a member of the church for the longest time. She was Women's Missionary Union president, Sunday School teacher for several age groups, and worked with teenagers in Girls' Auxiliary (G.A.s) and Baptist Young People's Union (B.Y.P.U.). She was chairman of the Hertiage Room which housed the history of the church. She was a past Director of the Birmingham Association G.A.s. She was a past president of the Thalian Literary Club and a former Worth Matron of Electa Chapter #16, O.E.S. She was a member of the Stonewall Chapter, United Daughter of the Confederacy. She was employed at Birmingham Electric Company which merged with Alabama Power Company for more than 20 years. She owned Gray Letter Service for over 25 years. Her hobbies included quilting and scrapbooking. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 22, at 1:00 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel with burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation was on Thursday, October 21, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Baptist Church of Irondale, 6021 Old Leeds Road, lrondale, AL 35210, or to your favorite charity. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood.
