He moved with his parents to Greene County, Tennessee in 1804. He learned about hat making from his father. He moved to Monroe County, Indiana in 1819 and was one of the first pioneers of Monroe County, Indiana. He became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1820 he married 1st to Jency Tyrant (Grant). They had eight children, all became Methodist ministers. Five years after Jency died, he married Mrs. Matida Williams-Butcher. She had eight children and she and Elias had nine children. Five of their children are listed in the Monroe County, Indiana Census in 1850. Some time after it was taken about 1852 Elias and his second family moved to McLennan County, Texas. There his last four children were born. In 1869 they moved to Benton County, Arkansas, where he died on April 10, 1870
