Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in L. B. Hall Memory Chapel for Lydia Griffin Wertz, 87, of 921 SW Rogue River Ave., who died Monday (Nov. 9, 1970) in Mariola Nursing Home. The Rev. F. W. Hopkins will officiate, and burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
A lifetime resident of Josephine County, she was born Sept. 7, 1883, in the Shan Creek area, and was the youngest and last remaining survivor of the 13 children of William and Mary Ann Griffin, who crossed the plains in 1852 and first settled near the Jackson County stream now known as Griffin Creek.
She was active in many community organizations in earlier years, and at the time of her death still maintained membership in Fruitdale Grange, Josephine County Pomona Grange and the Oregon State Grange. On Dec. 12, 1905, in Grants Pass she married James Garfield Wertz, who died in 1959.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mary Brazie, Tillicum, Wash.; Mrs. D. H. (Ida) McCargar, Yreka, Calif.; and Mrs. T. D. (Helen) Hopson, Grants Pass; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
