US Congressman. Elected as a Whig to represent Pennsylvania's 11th District in the Thirtieth and Thirty-First Congresses, he served from 1847 until his death. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he attended the Academy there and would later serve as a trustee for 20 years. He graduated from Princeton College in 1817, studied law at the Litchfield Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1820. Butler was Luzerne County Recorder (1821 to 1824), and was elected to four terms in the State House of Representatives (1832, 1838, 1839, 1843) before winning a seat at Capitol Hill. He died in Philadelphia. There is a cenotaph for him at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
