Walter J. Burke attended school at New Iberia, and at Springhill College, Mobile, Alabama. He then entered upon the study of law in the law office of Judge Robert S. Perry. After two years of this study, he entered the law school at Tulane University, receiving his law degree in 1889. He was admitted to the bar and began practicing in New Iberia that year. Burke Hall at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Lafayette, LA, is named after him. The Walter J. Burke papers are on file there. He was a member of the Constitutional Conventions of 1898, 1913, & 1921. He served in the State Senate from 1912 -1916. In 1912, was appointed Chairman of commission composed of members of the Senate and of the House to draft legislation with reference to the employer's liability to the employee. In 1933, Walter was appointed by President Roosevelt on the Advisory Board of Public Works Administration, and served until the termination of the labors of that Board.
