United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. He is best known for casting the deciding vote that settled the 1876 United States Presidential election and gave the presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes. Born in Berne, New York, he graduated from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1836, studied law and was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar Association in 1839. For thirty years, he specialized in the practice of patent, commercial, and railroad law in a practice he established in Newark, New Jersey. During the Civil War, he lobbied as a Unionist representative in Washington, DC for a compromise settlement between the northern and southern states. In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Bradley Justice to the Supreme Court of the United States and he served until his death at age 78 in Washington D.C. In 1876 he was named to the fifteen-man Electoral Commission to arbitrate and settle the disputed Presidential race between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. His vote made the decision 8 to 7 in favor of Hayes, who then became the 19th United States President.
