Diplomat, Professional Race Car Driver. He received recognition for being a race car driver and a long-time diplomat as well as a polo player and an international playboy. Although he was born in the Dominican Republic, he had a childhood in France, returning to Dominican Republic to study law for a short time before joining the military. In 1931 he was asked to be the Dominican Republic diplomat serving in Berlin during the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany; in France, first in Paris then during World War II the Vichy government; Buenos Aires; Rome; in Havana, witnessing the Cuban Revolution; and finally in Brussels. Upon Dominican Dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo's assassination on May 30, 1961, the new government removed him from his diplomatic positions, ending his 30-year diplomatic career. As an international playboy, he was linked romantically to such international notables as Eva Perón, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Kim Novak and many others. Of his five wives, two were listed as rich heiresses: In 1932 he married Flor de Oro Trujillo, the daughter of the Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. In 1942, he married French actress Danielle Darrieux. Doris Duke, an American billionaire tobacco heiress, became his wife for a year starting September 1, 1947. In 1953, he married Barbara Hutton, an American heiress of the Woolworth estate, for less than two years. His last wedding was at age 56 to the young French actress, Odile Rodin. Both polo and race car driving were expensive sports and with his alimony worth millions of dollars, he supported this expense. He owned several race cars during his career, gaining international fame, and becoming a famous and handsome Ferrari driver, yet never winning a race. After winning a polo game on the 4th of July, he celebrated into the wee hours of the next morning. On the way home, he crashed his silver Ferrari 250 GT cabriolet into a tree and dying from injuries from accident.
