The son of Henry & Mary (Ness or Nace) Bailey, he married Rose Anne Gunnet September 7, 1856, and fathered Calvin Luther, Emma E., Kate (married a Barber), Mrs. James McKendrick, Mrs. Harvey Miller, Clara V., and John Delphious (b. 07/01/85). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Almost a Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 8, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 10 as a private with Co. D, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but procured a substitute and mustered out a few days later.

He moved to Gettysburg in 1888 where he died at age 75-5-17 in Annie M. Warner Hospital from "valvular heart disease."
