Army Sgt. Eshbaugh was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, Task Force 34, Oklahoma National Guard, Lexington, Oklahoma. He died when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter he was in went down in the vicinity of Tallil killing seven in all. Oklahoma National Guard officials say the unit mobilized in June and left in late August. Military officials say the chopper was flying in formation from Kuwait to Balad and none of the other helicopters reported an attack. A malfunction on the Chinook is suspected. After graduating from high school in 1982, Dan enlisted in the Air Force where he served for 10 years before being honorably discharged. In 1998, he joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard for two years then re-enlisted in 2002. Posthumously, he received the Bronze Star, Oklahoma Distinguished Service Medal and Lone Star Service Medal. Dan supported Oklahoma University Sooner football, loved barbecue grilling but his outstanding gift was as a devoted husband to his wife, Rachel, and loving father to a son and three daughters. He loved his country, worked hard and always tried to do the right thing every day.
