Note:

This memorial updated March 23, 2016 with DOB and DOD information. These edits are being accepted, but with some caution. The DOD edit request is for Nov. 29, 1810. The inscription lists the age at death as being 68y 5m 18d, on May 17, 1879. In some online calculators that works out to a DOB of Nov. 11, 1810.

The death location edit is being accepted for Missouri, but the source of that information was not provided. It is possible that John died there and was brought back over the Missouri/Iowa border to this cemetery for burial, of course, the distance not necessarily that great.

The following message was also received to use on this memorial:

"John Miller Rutledge served as a private in Captain Abraham Lincoln's company of mounted volunteers in the Black Hawk War, 1832."

Note: the following bio material received on April 23, 2018 per message information:

"Rutledge came to Illinois as a small child. His father James Rutledge was one of the founders of New Salem, Illinois, and he was the older brother of Ann Rutledge. During the Black Hawk War, Rutledge served in Abraham Lincoln's company of Illinois Mounted Volunteers. . In 1837, he moved to Van Buren County, Iowa. He joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1844, and he married Rachel Pettit on September 7, 1850. Seven years later, on May 26, 1857, he married Sarah Calhoun Harris, and they had two children. In 1860, he was living and farming at Lick Creek, Van Buren County, and owned real estate valued at $1,656 and a personal estate of $650. (papersofabrahamlincoln.org)"
