ARRINGTON COLD STORAGE
Arrington Cold Storage was built in 1928 by local businessmen and apple growers who bought stock in the corporation. John W. Wheeler was the manager. His job was to keep inventory and market fruit. In 1946 Mr. Wheeler retired and was followed by Ashby A. Lincoln, Jr. as manager until 1965.
Ice was made and used in bunkers on trucks and railroad cars to keep the fruit cold. In the '30s, not many people had electricity. Ice was trucked to homes and stores.
It was during the great depression that the storage changed to a cooperative. Profits were distributed as patronage refunds. The stock in the former corporation was kept at half its value. In the 1950s when the Shipman Cold Storage came up for sale, the Arrington Board of Directors voted to purchase it.
Barrels and baskets were used to ship apples.
Later they were put in 3, 4, and 5 lb. bags and cardboard boxes. Preparing the apples to be shipped gave jobs to local people. Government surpluses of cheese and peanuts were stored at the Shipman storage and fees helped pay for the Shipman facility.
In the meantime, it became fashionable to have one's own cold storage. The larger growers built their own and the smaller growers went out of business. As the need for the larger storages lessened both storages were sold around 1968 and proceeds paid off all the patronage refunds. The stock was put back to its original cost and was paid off. Some of the cooperative's regular employees were K. B. Oakley, Owen Jones, Alfred Reese, Tom Harris, William Ewers, Clinton Thompson, and Emmitt Martin. The present owner is Mountain Cove Apples, Inc. Which is owned by Mountain Cove Orchards, Inc. and Bowman Apple Products, Inc.
